Orders and Rituals
Modern Western esotericism is not a single religion but a network woven from many groups, lineages and publications. From the Rosicrucian manifestos of the seventeenth century to the chaos magic of the twentieth, this page introduces several of the more influential movements, explaining their origins, ideas and representative rituals.
Rituals are described here only historically and culturally (who performed them, when, and with what symbolic meaning); no operational instructions for invocation, cursing or ritual are provided. The present-day organisations, membership numbers and doctrinal interpretations of these groups are often disputed; this page follows the consensus of academic research.
(Rosicrucianism)Rosicrucianism
起源Origins
Between 1614 and 1616, three anonymous documents were published in the German lands: the Fama Fraternitatis (1614), the Confessio Fraternitatis (1615) and the Chymische Hochzeit Christiani Rosencreutz (The Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreuz, 1616). The first two proclaimed the existence of a secret brotherhood founded by the legendary Christian Rosenkreuz, dedicated to reforming all of Europe through knowledge. The third is usually attributed to the Lutheran theologian Johann Valentin Andreae, who later called it a ludibrium (a playful jest).
AMORC。Most scholars believe that no physical “Rosicrucian Order” existed at first; the manifestos are better read as allegories calling for a thorough renewal of religion and learning in the context of the Protestant Reformation. Yet they caused a sensation, and many people publicly declared their wish to join; only afterwards did groups actually bearing the Rosicrucian name appear, such as the Golden and Rosy Cross in eighteenth-century Germany, the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia founded in 1866, and AMORC, founded in the United States in 1915.
Core ideas
A combination of Christian faith, alchemy, Kabbalah and natural philosophy.
An emphasis on healing others as a duty, free of charge (one of the brotherhood’s rules in the Fama).
“Universal reformation”: the hope of a comprehensive renewal of religion, science and society.
Representative rituals and symbols
The most famous episode in the manifestos is the “discovery of Rosenkreuz’s tomb”: 120 years after his death, his followers are said to have opened a seven-sided vault and found his body intact, surrounded by symbolic images and books. This “vault” image later became the symbolic setting for initiation rituals in several Rosicrucian and Masonic systems. The combination of rose and cross is often interpreted as uniting spiritual blossoming with sacrifice.
(Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn)The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn
起源Origins
Founded in London in 1888 by three Freemasons: William Wynn Westcott, S. L. MacGregor Mathers and William Robert Woodman. Its claimed basis was a “Cipher Manuscript” written in code and correspondence with a German lady, “Fräulein Sprengel”; later research generally regards this account of origins as largely fictitious. In 1892 an inner order, the R.R. et A.C., was established to teach practical ceremonial magic. Around 1900 the Order split over internal power struggles.
Its members included many cultural figures, such as the poet W. B. Yeats (Nobel laureate in Literature, 1923), the actress Florence Farr, the writer A. E. Waite and, later going his own way, Crowley.
Core ideas
The Golden Dawn’s hallmark is synthesis: it took the Kabbalistic “Tree of Life” as its overall framework and fitted astrology, tarot, alchemical symbolism, Enochian magic, Egyptian deities and more into a single set of “correspondence tables”. Members advanced grade by grade up the levels of the Tree of Life, each grade requiring the study of prescribed knowledge and the passing of examinations.
Representative rituals
Neophyte ritual: Symbolises the initiate’s passage from darkness to light, strongly theatrical and ancient-Egyptian in flavour.
Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram: A basic daily exercise taught by the Order, symbolising the cleansing and demarcation of personal space; it later spread widely through modern esoteric groups.
Influence on tarot: The Rider–Waite tarot published in 1909 by Waite and the artist Pamela Colman Smith, and the Thoth tarot by Crowley and the artist Frieda Harris, both derive from the Golden Dawn’s tarot system and remain the most common tarot decks today.
Thelema
起源Origins
他於 1907 年與他人創立 A∴A∴ 教團,1910 年代起又在東方聖殿騎士團(Ordo Templi Orientis,O.T.O.) The Englishman Aleister Crowley (1875–1947) claimed that in April 1904 in Cairo he received a text dictated by an entity named Aiwass, which he wrote down as The Book of the Law (Liber AL vel Legis), thereby founding Thelema (Greek for “will”). In 1907 he co-founded the order A∴A∴, and from the 1910s held leading positions in the Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.). From 1920 to 1923 he ran the “Abbey of Thelema” at Cefalù in Sicily, until he was expelled by Mussolini’s government. In his lifetime Crowley was notorious in the British press, dubbed “the wickedest man in the world”, but his writings had an enormous influence on twentieth-century esotericism and popular culture.
Core ideas
(Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law)和「愛是律法,愛在意志之下」(Love is the law, love under will)。 Famous lines from The Book of the Law: “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law” and “Love is the law, love under will”. In Thelemic interpretation, “what thou wilt” refers to each person’s “True Will”, not arbitrary self-indulgence.
History is divided into “Aeons”, with the “Aeon of Horus” said to have begun in 1904.
Crowley defined magic (which he spelled “magick”) as “the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will”.
Representative ritual
The Gnostic Mass (Ecclesiæ Gnosticæ Catholicæ Canon Missæ, also called Liber XV): written by Crowley in 1913, it is the central public ritual of the O.T.O., structurally modelled on the Catholic and Orthodox Mass and led by a priest, priestess and other officers, symbolising the union and sanctification of the life force.
Wicca
起源Origins
The retired British civil servant Gerald Gardner (1884–1964) claimed that in 1939 he was initiated into a coven in the New Forest area of southern England that continued an ancient religion. After Britain repealed its Witchcraft Act in 1951, he published Witchcraft Today (1954) and The Meaning of Witchcraft (1959), publicly promoting this religion. His high priestess Doreen Valiente substantially rewrote the ritual texts. In the 1960s Alex Sanders founded the “Alexandrian” tradition, and Wicca subsequently spread to the United States and branched out widely.
Gardner’s claim of the “survival of an ancient religion” was heavily influenced by the anthropologist Margaret Murray’s “witch-cult” theory, which historians have since rejected. The research of historian Ronald Hutton shows that Wicca is a new religion that took shape in Britain in the mid-twentieth century, drawing on ceremonial magic, folklore, Romanticism and nature worship.
Core ideas
Most traditions worship a Goddess and a Horned God and emphasise natural and seasonal cycles.
(An it harm none, do what ye will),1960 年代由瓦連特公開推廣。The “Wiccan Rede”: commonly phrased “An it harm none, do what ye will”, publicly promoted by Valiente in the 1960s.
Small covens are the organisational unit, with emphasis on initiatory lineage.
Representative rituals
- 年輪(Wheel of the Year):一年八個節日(sabbat),包括四個源自凱爾特曆法的節日(Samhain、Imbolc、Beltane、Lughnasadh)和二分二至。 The Wheel of the Year: Eight festivals (sabbats) a year, comprising four derived from the Celtic calendar (Samhain, Imbolc, Beltane, Lughnasadh) and the solstices and equinoxes. Some festival names (such as Ostara, Litha and Mabon) were only proposed in the 1970s by the American writer Aidan Kelly and others.
Esbats: Regular gatherings held at the full moon.
Casting the circle: Marking out sacred space at the start of a ritual, symbolising worship “between the worlds”.
(Chaos Magic)Chaos Magic
起源Origins
Emerged in Britain in the late 1970s. Its principal founders were Peter J. Carroll and Ray Sherwin; in 1978 Carroll published Liber Null, and in the same year they and others founded the Illuminates of Thanateros (IOT). It was strongly influenced by the artist Austin Osman Spare (1886–1956) and was contemporary with punk culture and postmodern thought.
Core ideas
“Belief is a tool”: No single system is held to be true; beliefs are treated as tools to be switched as needed (so-called “paradigm shifting”).
An emphasis on practical results and a rejection of rigidly hierarchical orders and elaborate traditional ritual.
Free borrowing from all kinds of sources, including fictional characters from popular culture.
Representative practice
Sigils: Derived from Spare, the concept is to turn a statement of intent into an abstract design and deliberately “forget” its original meaning. In cultural studies it is often regarded as a typical example of chaos magic’s psychologising, individualising tendency.
Other Related Groups
Freemasonry: The first Grand Lodge was founded in London in 1717. Freemasonry is itself a fraternal organisation, not a magical group, but its graded initiation rites and symbolic system deeply influenced groups such as the Rosicrucians and the Golden Dawn.
The Theosophical Society (1875): See the History of Magic page.
Martinism: Originating in eighteenth-century France, centred on Christian mysticism.
